Some marriages are made in heaven, but they all have to be maintained on earth. Mrs Miracle

About This Quote

Mrs Miracle is a story about a young woman, Betty Dillman, who has an accident that leaves her paralysed from the neck down. The doctor tells her she will never walk again, but he also says, “We can give you some special physiotherapy to help you regain some movement.” He warns her that if she does not make the effort she will remain in the wheelchair for the rest of her life. Betty decides to take this advice seriously and starts working on regaining some movement. She puts herself through rigorous physical therapy sessions with Dr Quigley, her doctor. She pushes herself to regain the ability to walk again. After several months of treatment, she is able to walk with crutches and regain some movement in her legs.

Then one day she takes a chance and gets back on her feet for the first time in years. She is filled with self-doubt and tells Dr Quigley, “I know I can walk today, but I wonder what would happen if I tried it again?” Dr Quigley replies, “It’s your decision. Do you want to try walking again?” She replies, “Yes, let’s go for it!” To which he replies, “Okay then! You can try walking again!” And so she does… She makes an effort and tries walking again… She falls down… But she gets up again... And so it goes until one day she successfully walks out of Dr Quigley’s office. This is the first step on what will be a long journey towards recovery. Over time she begins walking with crutches and then without crutches… She learns how to perform basic tasks… She even starts dating her doctor! Things are looking up for Mrs Miracle! Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever and one day fate steps in once more and voila! She has an accident and ends up back in a wheelchair once more… But this time there is no place for Dr Quigley to help because he has moved on with his life… Betty is now completely alone fighting against fate… With no hope of ever getting out of the chair again… And so begins a new chapter in Mrs Miracle’s life as she struggles against all odds to walk once more! This story teaches us that sometimes we have no choice but to go against our own personal beliefs or what others have told
